Day 3: Glacier Bay. Glacier Bay is a
National Park that is only accessible by plane or boat. It was
freezing, wet, and amazing! The pictures below are of Marjorie, the
glacier. This glacier is 20 miles long and moves 7 feet per year. They
parked the boat in front of it for 1 hour and we got to watch and
listen to the glacier calve. Even with crowds of people on the
promenade, it was dead silent as we waited for the next chunk of ice to
fall. It would start with a loud crack that sounded like thunder and
then a chunk of ice would break off the glacier. We had never seen
anything like it and were in complete awe.
Do
you see the bald eagle flying toward the glacier? Below is another
glacier we saw that they call Big Blue. That is a huge cave in the
front.
This was one of our favorite sights to see and we did not even have to get off the boat!
Random thought: Out of hundreds of staff members on the cruise ship, less than 30 of them were from the United States. Isn't that amazing?! We got to meet so many people from all over the world!
Port
3: Ketchikan. This is a really cute town that reminds me of the scenes
of Alaska in the movie "The Proposal". We were only there for a few
hours so we decided to take our own tour around town and then we went to
a lumberjack show.
It was a fun, brief visit to Ketchikan and then we were off to
Victoria. It was the required international stop and we were only there
for a couple hours one night. We don't have the best pictures because I
couldn't figure out the correct night setting on the camera.
A blurry shot of the Empress Hotel. Below: The Capitol building.
Here
is a partial view of our Princess Cruise ship. It was huge and
amazing! We had a fantastic time on our vacation and enjoyed relaxing,
sightseeing, eating, sleeping in, meeting people, and seeing Alaska!
